Day 21 Angels of House Peña Crespa (Niévares) to Gijón +-22km’s

It’s Sunday and I did not want the family to get up early to make breakfast for me. I knew I had a reservation in place in Gijón anyway.

Breakfast was served at 7:30am and Mama did herself proud. It was all laid on from Tortilla’s, toast, cake, Jamon and fresh jams etc etc. I was told to eat, Luis said there are hills that require energy. After all I was not going back to the church but simply over the mountain to reconnect with the Camino. The harder option but more scenic. Very easy to say that in one sentence, a little different actually doing it. Luis drew me a map on how to get over, fortunately I had Maps.me anyway but it all kind of worked in the end. I could have stayed on the farm for a few days, it’s so beautiful. I needed to hit my head to remind myself I’m on a Camino not a holiday in a log cabin in the mountains. 

The route eventually took me down to Peón and then straight up the other side. Mama packed me padkos, so I managed to eat more to make it up the mountain yet again. Valleys are not always fun, this reminds me of the Salvador, fortunately you are rewarded with amazing views. As you reach the top there is a bar, that always means Coke time for me. At this point you have beautiful views of Gijón.

I did not enjoy the urban sprawl trying to get into town but that’s the Camino. Take the good with the bad. I’m not staying in a very nice place but the bar around the corner served the Menu Del Dia and I enjoyed some Asturias cider to compliment the meal. 341km’s to Santiago as per Wise Pilgrim.

Fisterra/Muxía Day 4 Hospital to Fisterra +-14km’s

The morning started with rain. We walked from the Albergue to the bar, an instant soaking. Many Pilgrims stopped at the O Casteliño bar as it’s the last bar for 15km’s. The rain continued and we decided to avoid the 300 metre drop to the town of Cee and opted for a taxi for 6 people. We were dropped off at Cee and enjoyed some coffee before setting off in the rain to complete the last 14 km’s to Fisterra. A wet morning in Hospital. Balu from Hungary and Robert in Corcubión Neria. Day 2 San Sebastián to Orio +-18km’s

We left San Sebastián at 7:15am. The weather was typical of Northern Spain, lots of rain about. Somehow we avoided most of it. A miracle in my opinion. My arm needed to remain dry, a real blessing. The route took us approximately 6.8km’s from San Sebastián to Igueldo. As we got to the end of La Concho beach we found a hotel that served coffee and breakfast. It was time to cover the backpacks as it started drizzling. The climb up to Igueldo was not a bad one, we managed to have fantastic ocean views despite the grey skies. I struggled with the GoPro attachment on my backpack but I guess Johann can work with some of the footage. From Igueldo we walked another 10km’s to Orio and checked in at Albergue De Peregrinos for the night. It took us ages walking through the mud and some steep downhills on smooth stones. Day 13 Santa Cruz de Bezana to Requejada +-21km’s

We got up around 5ish as we thought a 27km day was upon us but that was not to be. I was delighted only doing 21km’s as I’m really tired at the moment. There were thunder showers around and I was wondering if we could avoid them. My only concern was hail. The climate here is like Johannesburg in summer. We walked from Santa Cruz de Bezana to Mompía and managed to see a beautiful sunrise. The walk through Boo was beautiful and as for the rest it was pretty much boring road. We checked in at the Albergue de Peregrinos Clara Camp. Sadly it’s not maintained properly. The early morning in Santa Cruz de Bezana.
